Whitesville, KY. (PRWEB) February 29, 2012 – St. Mary’s of the Woods has never let its small size hinder it from providing top quality educational opportunity to all of its students. It provides as warm a community, and as much depth of care for each student as a very large family would do. The challenge can be that a private, and privately funded, school with 176 students altogether, and about 140 1st to 8th graders, sometimes has to scramble for school fundraising ideas, especially for high-cost, low permanence items such as school IT. In the words of Principal Sister Suzanne Sims, “St. Mary’s faith community continues to grow through the efforts of many dedicated persons, and by the grace of God. Our prayer is that our efforts, however small, may in some way bring others closer to our loving God.” School fundraising help consistent with their ideals and population size were hard to find, until they contacted AmadoraGiftsOfLove.com.
With Amadora’s fundraiser help, St. Mary of the Woods raised $6,736 in just two weeks’ time. This was enough to purchase interactive whiteboards for every classroom, and to meet their internal goals for classroom technology development. No, they didn’t just raise tuition, and neither did they cancel classes for two weeks so their children could go sell junk food, groceries, or wrapping paper. In economically difficult times, non-essential things like candy and wrapping paper do not sell well. Bake sales and fun runs face the same difficulties. Perishable grocery items are hard to sell profitably within the narrow times appropriate for keeping food. Amadora had a better fundraising idea.
St. Mary’s of the Woods found something to sell for a fundraiser that is an essential, practical, item, that isn’t perishable, and that can also be very nice quality, so people don’t feel like they’re wasting money. They sold bed sheets! Luxury, microfiber, bed sheets, in four different sizes and nine different colors. After the fundraiser was officially closed down, customers called the school back, asking to buy more, because the sheets were so nice. The school sold an additional 51 sets of sheets, and netted another $816.
Before the fundraiser, a poll of grade school parents in the community had shown that the number one reason parents had for choosing another school over St. Mary’s was the perception that St. Mary’s did not have up to date technology, compared to the other schools nearby. Maintaining enrollment is essential for keeping tuition manageable, so maintaining the technology levels important to parents became an almost mission-critical priority.
Nonprofit fundraising can run the risk of draining volunteers’ energy and resources, but, said Sister Sims, “This is the first school fundraiser we have ever had after which people have called us back, and asked to buy more. The Amadora sheets fundraiser is one we will be able to do again without diverting student and staff resources from the primary goal of education.”
In the initial, official, two weeks of the school fundraiser, between 170 and 140 students sold an average of two or three sets of sheets, with a couple students not selling any, and some selling much more. Though the luxury sheets retailed for about what you’d see in shops, during clearance events, the profit margin for St. Mary’s Grade School was actually about $16 per sheet set. The initial $6,736 was enough fundraising help to meet St. Mary’s technology upgrading goals, and the additional $816 was a good start on other school fundraiser goals.
